TOYOTA GAZOO Racing hoping to press home advantage at 6 Hours of Fuji

DENSO sponsored TOYOTA GAZOO Racing storm to victory in Belgium, and look to defend its lead at Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
A stunning one-two at the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps for Toyota Gazoo Racing marked the beginning of the 2018-19 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
The DENSO-supported TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team has entered two TS050 HYBRID cars in WEC which are fitted with several of the OE supplier’s parts including the rear hybrid motor, the inverter, spark plugs and oil and water coolant.
The #8 TS050 HYBRID of Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and WEC newcomer, and Formula 1 star, Fernando Alonso took victory on a day of dominance for Toyota.
The sister TOYOTA GAZOO Racing car – piloted by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López – staged a remarkable comeback from a pit lane start to finish second and round out an impressive one-two victory.
The result shot the team to the top of both the driver and team FIA World Endurance Championship standings and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has now won 17 of the previous 49 WEC races, including the last four in a row.
The next challenge is the Le Mans 24 Hours in June, which Toyota is aiming to win for the first time. But it will face stiff competition from a 60-car grid which features 10 LMP1 cars and other stars of Formula 1, alongside Alonso.
Jenson Button, the 2009 F1 world champion, has secured a drive with privateer squad SMP Racing to make his Le Mans debut, too. Button will race alongside fellow ex-F1 driver Vitaly Petrov and former IndyCar man Mikhail Aleshin. The team, minus Button, finished sixth at the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.
Fellow F1 race winners Juan Pablo Montoya, who will drive for United Autosports, and Pastor Maldonado, who drives for Dragonspeed, will contest the race in the LMP2 category.
